Why AC2?

Postby drew2727 » Fri Jul 16, 2010 2:22 am

Just a quick background.. I have tested/played endless amounts of MMO's and every once in awhile I find myself surfing through mmorpg.com to see if there is a new game that will catch my eye that I will perhaps enjoy as much as AC2.. Every couple months or so after surfing through the site I am always so disappointed in the new upcoming games that are highly anticipated. So my question to you is this... What specifically makes AC2 so attractive to you guys? Is it because it was one of your first MMO experiences? Was it the community? Has any MMO since filled your AC2 void?

For me its:

1- the classes/races I mean come on now how many MMO's have Lugian tacticians :) Hivekeepers ect..
2- The lack of useless npc's all over the place like today's mmo's.
3- What i loved about early AC2 was field crafting
4- Unique mobs unseen anywhere else.
5- on the go incursion quests , just awesome!
6- unique sound tracks and player music, none of this crap like lotro where people play 2010 pussy tunes in middle earth.
7- Ya and the community was also very good.
8- DHO like mentioned further down "The Vaults" that was awesome. I loved the fact they showed only screens with the story movie. It made it look more like a story from the old days with nobody to record a live video hehe.

That's just to name a few.

AC2 was and will always be my favorite MMO.

I think one of my favorite things was actually the spending of XP.

1) It allowed you to completely customize your character
2) You got to raise skills all the freakin' time, instead of waiting until you leveled up. It just gave a whole lot more sense of accomplishment, and it made it so you could log in for like 15 minutes and feel like you actually did something useful.

And of course, everything that was mentioned in the previous post :P
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

Like AC it jhad this frontier feel to it, Exploring this familar land warped drastically by time, having to make all of your own stuff or bartering for it, fighting these incredibly weird monsters. But I also really enjoyed how they did the skills differently but still kept the flexibility and freedom. For that matter, I liked The vaults too; I think it's cool how you were rewarded with a little movie instead of some item.

Those are some great responses. I liked the classes ALOT! Infact I liked them so much that I could never decide what I wanted. I could play any class in that game and love it. I also like that you could make crazy classes like a melee sage or a melee elem. On top of that the weapons are very cool and there is nothing better then having a big glowing sword that screams im a badass.

I also agree with the comment about the XP. Each character could be so different from the next and it was very fun to make your own build. Other then my elem one of my most successful pvp/soloing classes in that game that turned out to be a blast was the defender. Very fun 1 on 1 class.

And lastly, I really like the feel of the game. I think "frontier" is the perfect word to describe it. I didn't feel like I was in an instance or just a second away from a loading screen. I liked how huge the world felt. Even though sometimes it was tedious trying to find the inc moarseman. But that was fun too when you had groups battling for the inc mob. The environment made the game very enjoyable. It was fun to be out soloing for whatever item you needed and were almost excited to run into someone passing by.

I could go on for days as I'm sure alot of us could. Good times..

Well i started in 99 so no not my first ac was my first but several things i like so much about ac2 thats why its still one of my all time favorite untill now.

I liked the classes in ac2 and skill trees.

Same go for combat in my humble opinion still one of best.

Very good grafhics way ahaed of its time game still looks verygood comepare to most mmo's today.

Dye your armor.

Craft your own kingdom armor it was all so great also becouse of quests chains you had to do to get those armor ill never forget those moments when finally you crafted your own set!

Making music by instruments that where dropped from mobs guitar drums violin fluit and many more.

Quests and fellowships doing quest global chat you just ask for people who needed some quests and always people needed them and many willing to help dont matter if different allegiance, always fun even with total strangers, most quests where also repeatble quest with cooldown.

Many memorable quest like DEIMOS or EIDELON where you go with 40- 50 or 60 players doing QUEST run awesome.

The vaults that reveal ac2 story where awesome also.

Open dungeons for any player so no INSTANCE no bloody soulbound no guidance with arrows on map or !, ? above npc's.

You could drop items on ground stand ingame for days without kickout, craft or sell in field no npc needed.

Grind you could form a fellowship with 9 people and go to some spot and grind for hours and hours it was never dull and manytimes i had alot fun grinding with a fellow.

And so many more things that made this game awesome.

Many who played ac2 for long time where realy fans of this game thats maybe why community was great also.

Before i forget one of most importend was COMMUNITY up untill now it was for me one of best in any mmo!

One thing forest pointed out but I forgot was the combat. But why was the combo so awesome? Every class had a basic heal, and every class had a vigor heal. You weren't completely reliant on other people for everything. It also let you distinguish the good players from the bad players. The bad players let themselves run out of vigor and the good ones didn't :) It wasn't just "spam this spam this spam this". You actually had to pay attention to your vigor.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

Yep dang i forgot to mention that too, "the combat" was just awesome in AC2. A lugian beserker (AKA reap zerker in the beginning) was just so much fun compared to AC1's lame ass melee combat. And i loved the fast pace.

For me it changed over time. From about level 1 to 20 I pretty much played solo since my friends were still playing AC1. I have always felt that Osteth was the most complete when the game was released. I guess that makes sense. I had a blast doing the quests and vaults. Because I was soloing I was pretty much unaware of the problems and exploits.

By about level 20 or so friends started to come over to AC2 and I started to group a lot more. This was pretty important since the content started to get thinner. I loved doing Fets and the Burun quests. Burun Patron FTW.

Level 30 plus was all about grouping for me. The people were the best. In general AC2 players tend to be more laid back and accepting. You were allowed to suck in AC2 as long as you weren't a jerk. WOW seems almost entirely populated by arrogant assholes. God forbid you screw up in WOW or don't have the 'appropriate' level gear. In AC2 you would laugh and forget about it. I actually liked PUG's in AC2.

In general I though the classes were great when the game was released. I loved "run casting" with my sorcerer. Tacticians were the bomb. etc. For me the great re-balancing was when things started to suck.

I played the game till they shut the doors but I played very little towards the end. All of my friends had left and every character I played just felt weak compared to the 'old' days.

If this game wen't free to play I would be back in a heartbeat but I would only stay if the community came back.

If higher or stronger players needed some quest you always could come along even when you suck never any word about weaker or bad players the strong just finished the quest for whole fellow and all went there own way.
Thats why i also loved AC2 you could even with total stranger doing quest and they never ask first what gear or stats or what class you just join fellowship and start quest when 9 persons in fellow.

I mainly remember incidents where some jerks try ruin a dungeon run for all others like with deimos runs where some tact just aggro deimos so total whipe but this was rather rare most of community knew how to bahave:)

It was not a clone of a tolkien rip off.

The environment was ahead of it's time.
You should side step projectiles which means you could reasonable live through a lot more than most MMO. Because honestly if someone throws a fucking rock at you, and you dive out of the way. it shouldn't track you like a damned heat sensitive missile.
The classes, Crafting, monsters and story were unique and very original.
you weren't dependent on other people.
Little to no downtime
Traveling was easier
Mounts at a really low level.
Community was helpful
There were situations where if you weren't careful you could easily get in over your head, but the difference is in a good grouping who understood their class you could overcome insurmountable odds and still arise Victorious -- and that was an oddly exciting sensation. This not something you can get in any other MMO I've played.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

AC2
One of those games where you actually felt heroic
If you were good enough even a group mob could be soloed
Getting pwned by SoD (when in HoO) or by HoO (when in SoD) on the beaches was awesome even though I had to swim back again from the fort.

Gurogs. Back when they would launch you halfway across Linvak if you were standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.
